| Bilingual Children:
Creative Corner
offers a program for children who speak English fluently, but whose
reading and writing are not at the same level. The gap between these
skills is not surprising as reading and writing in English are
taught with specific methods and programs.
At Creative Corner, using
the Guided Reading program as organized by Fountas and Pinnell, our
teachers help children develop and improve reading strategies and
then support them as they read. Using regular assessment, including
running records and miscue analysis, our teachers select books and
stories that will offer challenges and opportunities for problem
solving, but that are easy enough to read with some fluency. Our
students, from kindergarten through middle school, work with books
that include both exciting new publications and classic examples of
children’s literature. To teach and improve writing skills we use a
‘Writing Workshop’ program that employs multiple drafts and
constructive conferencing. Teachers and students assess together
using the ‘6 Traits of Good Writing’ method. As with our Reading
Program, the focus is on each child achieving his or her personal
best.
These methods of instruction
for reading and writing are widely used in the USA,
and at Creative Corner they
are implemented by experienced teachers trained in their theory and
practice. As both Guided Reading and Writing Workshop focus on the
child as an individual with specific needs and strengths, they are
the perfect match for children living and learning in two languages.
